Course Description
The content of the course is set by the Texas Department of Public Safety as is the course length. The classroom portion of the course includes (I) The application process (II) License restrictions and rules (III) Non-violent dispute resolution (IV) Rights of citizens involving the use of force and their restrictions and (V) The safe handling and storage of firearms. We furnish you with an application packet and assist you in filling out all the paperwork, so it is ready to submit to the State. We notarize the affidavits included in your application packet, and we take your photos, all at no additional charge to you.
For the handgun proficiency demonstration, you will shoot a course of fire consisting of 50 rounds fired at a life-sized silhouette target. The majority of the shots are fired at close proximity to the target. Twenty rounds are fired from the 3-yard line, 20 rounds are fired from the 7-yard line and the remaining ten rounds are fired from the 15-yard line. The majority of applicants fulfill the handgun proficiency demonstration during the first 40 rounds of fire. All firing is highly supervised with a range safety officer directing every activity using standard range procedures and commands.
During the longer daylight hours of the summer months, we conduct the handgun proficiency part of the course the same day as the classroom portion. In the fall and winter, it is conducted on another day and arranged to fit the students' schedules. In either case, we can accommodate you if your schedule requires you do the live fire on a day other than that of the classroom session.
At the completion of the course, you will be issued the State required Handgun Proficiency Certificate.
This certificate must be included in the application packet you send to the State of Texas.
