Answers to questions we are asked.

Can I take the class if I don’t own a handgun?
Yes. We have several semi-automatic handguns available for rent. The rental fee is $20 and includes 50 rounds of ammunition for the class. All are semi-automatic pistols and are firearm models often used for concealed carry.

Can I share a handgun with someone else?
Yes. We often have couples with one handgun; you simply shoot at different times. This isn’t a problem because class size sometimes dictates that we shoot in two stages anyway.

Can I take the class if I don’t know how to shoot?
The CHL class is not designed to teach you how to shoot. It assumes you have a basic working knowledge of how to operate a handgun. If you have no experience at all with a handgun, then it is recommended that you first get some instruction on how to load, fire and handle a handgun safely.

What if I don’t pass the class?
Our classes are No-Fail classes. We work with you to insure you know all the material and can pass the 50-question exam. The only exception to this policy is if you create a safety hazard on the shooting range, you will be disqualified. If you simply pay attention and follow simple instructions, you will have no problem.

What should I bring to class?
If you have completed your application online at the Department of Public Safety web site, print out and bring your receipt/bar code with you. If you have not, then we will provide the application materials for you. You must bring a current photo ID, preferably a Texas driver’s license. Pens, paper, etc are provided. Please dress in something other than a white shirt or blouse. We take your passport photos, and the State requires a white background for the photo. It is better to wear something with some color for contrast. Keep all firearms unloaded and cased until needed. You will not need a firearm for the classroom portion of the course.

What should I bring for the range?
Bring your handgun unloaded and in a case. Leave it in your locked car until range time. If you are being dropped off for the class (or riding a motorcycle), and are unable to secure your gun in the car, then bring it to one of the instructors, and it will be secured for you. The minimum caliber allowed for qualification is .32. For ammo, you will need fifty rounds minimum. If you have a magazine loader, bring it with you. If you don't have a loader, consider buying one. They save a lot of wear and tear on your fingers (and time at the range). They are inexpensive and well worth the money.

For attire, dress comfortably and for the weather. If inclement weather is predicted, bring some rain gear. Open-toe shoes, sandals, flip-flops, etc. are not permitted on the range. Bring eye and ear protection if you have it, otherwise it will be provided for you. It is strongly advised that you wear a shirt or blouse that buttons up high enough to prevent hot brass from going down the front. A snug-fitting T-shirt worn over, under or instead of a shirt/blouse is an alternative as is a scarf. A brimmed hat, baseball cap or visor with a brim over the forehead is advised.

May I reschedule a class?
Yes. We understand extemporaneous circumstances happen. If you need to reschedule, just call or email us, and we will move you to a class of your choosing, at no additional cost to you.
